Commercial activities were carried out by sea, mainly with the city of Puerto Plata. Regarding the population situation of 1993, the population was made up of 12,556 inhabitants, of which 5,899 equivalent to 46.98% belonged to the rural area and 6,657 with 53.02% belonged to the urban area. A study carried out currently shows an average population of 20,000 inhabitants. It has an area of ​​248.9 km² and a population density close to 66.67 km².
