The first settlers of the municipality of Río San Juan were the Ciguayos Indians, belonging to the Maguá cacicazgo, who called the Cumíti River, which was later given the name of Río San Juan, in honor of a cacique from Puerto Plata. , which was baptized with the name of San Juan. When the indigenous race disappeared, this region began to be populated at the beginning of the last century; the first settlers settled in the rural area, such as: Juan Francisco, José Ramón Padilla, Juan de Sala, Miguel Díaz, Nicanor Estévez, Don Fello Castellano, Baldomero Guzmán and Felipón Bonilla. The population was located near the mouth of the River; and it was called La Boca, due to its location in the place.
In 1914, the urban population had a notable increase, so on June 1, 1944 it was elevated to a Municipal District, by presidential decree. At that time there were no roads, only a local road connecting with the municipality of Cabrera.
Commercial activities were carried out by sea, mainly with the city of Puerto Plata. With the creation of the municipal district, the appointments of the first authorities arose: Daniel Sánchez Tavera (Head of the “Trustee” district) Nicanor Estévez (Treasurer) Juan Ventura Florimón (City Clerk) Juanico Adámes (Justice of the Peace) Fermín Holguín Bono (Secretary of the Justice of the Peace) Eudoso Bonilla (secretary of the Dominican Party) the only one existing in the country, being head of state the tyrant President Rafael Leonidas Trujillo.
Regarding the population situation of 1993, the population was made up of 12,556 inhabitants, of which 5,899 equivalent to 46.98% belonged to the rural area and 6,657 with 53.02% belonged to the urban area. A study carried out currently shows an average population of 20,000 inhabitants. It has an area of 248.9 km² and a population density close to 66.67 km². The municipality of Río San Juan, has the most up-to-date means of communication such as: Cable Television, Telephone, Station, Post Office and telecommunications, among others.
