Cabarete is a District of the Municipality of Sosúa in the province of Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic, known for its tourism and its beaches. It was founded in 1835 by Sofonías Kingsley (as part of his Mayorazgo de Koka estate), along with his mixed-race family, and 53 slaves whom he would have freed from his Florida plantations, while the island of Hispaniola was under Haitian rule. Anna Kingsley owned a house on the harbor that stretched out to the sea. Several descendants of the Kingsleys and former slaves now live in this area.
It is a small bohemian town on the north coast that is characterized by its youthful atmosphere and diversity of entertainment activities with a population of 14,606 inhabitants according to the National Statistics Office (ONE) in 2010.
